About 1,400 Yemenis flee to Djibouti within 24 hours
About 1,400 people fled Yemen for Djibouti within a 24-hour period, Djibouti’s economy and finance minister Ilyas Moussa Dawaleh said on Saturday. The influx comes as Houthi fighters tighten control over the Bab al-Mandeb strait.
Obock, a city near the Yemeni coast, has been a key arrival point for refugees escaping the conflict in Yemen. Safiya Ibrahim, humanitarian response coordinator for the International Organization for Migration, said vulnerable groups including women and children have reached Obock’s shores, with more expected soon.
The IOM reported that 76,000 people have been displaced by fighting in Yemen since July, with numbers rising sharply after recent escalations. Djibouti hosts over 36,000 registered refugees and asylum seekers, mostly from Somalia, Ethiopia, and Yemen. The Houthis recently captured the Red Sea port of Mocha and surrounding areas, forcing thousands to flee.
