Turkish and Somali forces have freed the Turkish ship LUTUF, which was hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia, the Somali Ministry of Defence said on Saturday.

The ship, flying the Cameroonian flag, was seized on August 17 near Eyl district in Puntland’s Nugaal region. The ministry said the operation destroyed four boats used by the pirates and killed 14 pirates.
The ministry did not provide details on casualties or the condition of the ship’s crew.
Abdullahi Warsame, a clan elder from the Jiifle community in Godob Jiiraan district, said the ship and its crew are safe.
The hijacking has raised new concerns about the return of piracy off Somalia’s coast.
