Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said an investigation is underway into the unexpected migrant influx in Ceuta last July. He denied reports claiming Morocco was behind the situation, calling these reports false and spread by far-right groups internationally, who use the migrant issue to oppose Spain and Europe.

Sánchez said the false information originated on social media linked to Russia and Israel, which exploited the situation to criticize the Spanish government. He added that data from the European Union’s external service shows no evidence that Moroccan authorities were involved in the influx.

The prime minister also said no intelligence shared with the Spanish government has indicated Moroccan involvement. He called for cooperation with Morocco to find a solution. Spain announced 168 million euros in financial aid to Ceuta to strengthen local services.
