Talks mediated by the United States and the United Kingdom between the federal government and the opposition have collapsed following the end of the president’s term in office, raising questions about the legality and credibility of state institutions. The situation reflects deepening political divisions, with no consensus on the country’s future direction.
The main dispute stems from differing views on the electoral system and the constitution. The federal government argues for a path based on universal suffrage, saying constitutional changes and electoral bodies are legal and represent progress. In contrast, the opposition, along with Puntland and Jubbaland, accuse the government of attempting to consolidate power, demanding instead that the 2012 constitution and the agreed-upon electoral model be upheld.
The political crisis has been compounded by Somalia's ongoing struggle with widespread insecurity and persistent conflict. Al-Shabaab remains active across large parts of the country, particularly in the south and center, causing deaths, destruction, and mass displacement. While Mogadishu enjoys relative calm, the nation as a whole still faces constant security threats that affect civilians and development.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian and economic situation is worsening, with millions facing food shortages and poverty, while international aid has declined. Political fragmentation between the federal government, some regional states, and Somaliland is further straining national unity. Nevertheless, a chance to salvage the situation remains, provided there is genuine dialogue, a broadly accepted political agreement, and international support to guide a peaceful process that can pull Somalia back from the brink and toward a stable future.
