New Somali Parliament Speaker Pledges to Strengthen International Ties
The newly elected Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama, has said he will focus on strengthening ties between Somalia’s parliament and legislative bodies worldwide.
Speaker Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur made the remarks after officially assuming the role, pledging to prioritize parliamentary diplomacy and international cooperation.
He was elected Speaker on August 10, 2026, after receiving 142 votes, while his rival candidate, Abdulkadir Omar Maalin, secured 30 votes.
The new Speaker also said he wants the House of the People to play a prominent role in Somalia’s relations with foreign parliaments and international institutions.
Reports from Mogadishu indicate that regional parliamentary leaders and international bodies have welcomed his election, with expectations of enhanced parliamentary and diplomatic cooperation for Somalia in the coming period.
