Laftagareen stated that forces supporting him should not be linked to Al-Shabaab and called for an independent investigation into allegations against these forces. He also urged AUSSOM to remain neutral in the political dispute between the Federal Government of Somalia and factions vying for control of South West State.
Tensions escalated following heavy fighting on August 17 in Baidoa between government forces and groups loyal to Laftagareen. The clashes resulted in deaths and injuries among both civilians and fighters. Security in the city remains fragile.
