Somalis at home and abroad are celebrating the 66th anniversary of Republic Day and national unity on July 1st, a historic date marking the union of the northern and southern regions of Somalia in 1960, which led to the founding of the Somali Republic.

In Mogadishu, various events took place, including flag-raising ceremonies, military parades, and gatherings honoring the struggle for independence and the role Somali heroes played in liberating the country. The Federal Government of Somalia called on citizens to mark the day peacefully, reinforcing national unity, solidarity, and progress.

July 1st holds great national significance as it symbolizes the merger of the northern regions, which gained independence from Britain on June 26, 1960, and the southern regions, which gained independence from Italy on July 1, 1960. The two sides united that same day to form the Somali Republic.

Somalis living abroad have also organized events to mark the occasion, showcasing Somali heritage, culture, and history to strengthen ties within the global Somali community.

As the anniversary is observed, Somalis are reflecting on the independence struggle and the efforts that led to the birth of the Somali Republic, hoping for a future built on peace, unity, development, and strong governance.
