US Congress Approves New Sanctions Bill Targeting Russia
Washington – The US House of Representatives has approved a new sanctions and tariffs package aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia. The bill, named the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, passed with a vote of 262 to 159. It targets Russia’s energy and defence sectors and its fleet of tankers used to evade sanctions.
The legislation was introduced by the late Senator Lindsey Graham and cleared the Senate last month. President Donald Trump is expected to sign it into law. The bill also allows Trump to impose tariffs on China, India, and other countries to reduce their reliance on Russian oil and gas, while extending sanctions on Iran.
Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk welcomed the vote, saying it increases pressure on Russia and those financing its aggression against Ukraine. The bill received bipartisan support after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged US lawmakers to pass it. Some Democrats opposed the bill, citing concerns over broad tariff powers granted to the president.
