Duane Davis convicted of Tupac Shakur murder
A Clark County court in Nevada has found Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis, a former gang leader, guilty of first-degree murder with a firearm after an 11-day trial. The verdict came after nearly three hours of deliberation. Davis is expected to be sentenced on October 13 and faces life imprisonment without parole.
Prosecutor Binu Palal told the court that Davis followed gang rules by seeking revenge for an attack on his uncle. Palal said Davis armed himself and led his gang to hunt down Tupac Shakur. The prosecution relied on Davis’s own statements to the media and his memoir, as well as secretly recorded meetings with investigators.
Defense lawyer Michael Sanft argued that Davis’s story lacked independent, reliable evidence and that the investigation was marred by police corruption and misconduct. Davis was accused of leading the South Side Compton Crips, who opposed Tupac’s affiliated gangs and his label, Death Row Records. Tupac Shakur was killed in 1996 in a case that deeply impacted rap history.
