Nearly 100 poor families in Hargeisa have faced severe hardship after the closure of businesses they depended on over the past three months. The shutdowns are linked to new taxes imposed by Somaliland’s Ministry of Finance, shortages of goods, and a decline in customers.

Canab Jama Furre, one of those affected, said her food and goods business closed, forcing her seven-member family to struggle with basic needs. She said the business income was their only source for food and water, but now they cannot afford to keep the fire burning regularly.

Hodo Ahmed Abdullahi, who supports a family of 12, said they are experiencing a difficult situation not seen in seven years. She said her business closed due to taxes and rising fuel and food prices. She also noted worsening water shortages and other living difficulties.

Fadumo Hayd Ali, secretary of the small traders’ committee, said almost 100 traders have closed their shops. She blamed the fuel price increases, taxes, and inflation for the problems facing traders and poor families.
