Somalia hosted the first meeting of Trade Ministers from countries in the Horn of Africa Initiative today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The meeting was chaired by Somalia’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Ambassador Jamaal Mohamed Hassan, who called for regional cooperation to establish a shared economic zone.

The minister emphasized the importance of approving and implementing the Regional Trade Facilitation Action Plan for 2026 to 2031 and forming the Regional Trade Facilitation Committee. He urged increased collaboration, investment, and participation from businesses and the private sector.
Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, South Sudan, and Sudan supported the action plan and the committee’s formation. The German government also confirmed its support for the regional trade agenda, highlighting the need for leadership from member states and coordinated technical and financial assistance.
