The Federal Government of Somalia has stepped up diplomatic efforts to prevent other countries from following Israel’s lead in recognizing Somaliland. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Mohamed Omar said Mogadishu is maintaining ongoing contacts with the administration of President Donald Trump and Arab governments to address the issue.

Ali Mohamed Omar stated that Somalia has urged Arab countries not only to condemn Israel’s decision but also to use their political ties and diplomatic influence to stop the recognition of Somaliland from spreading to other states. He noted that the US administration continues to support the principle of “one Somalia” and the country’s territorial unity.

In December 2025, Israel became the first United Nations member state to officially recognize Somaliland as an independent country. Somalia insists that any agreements concerning its territory, security, or foreign relations require federal government approval. It will continue diplomatic and legal efforts to prevent other countries from following Israel’s decision.
