Displaced Families from Kismayo Camps Complain of Unemployment and Poor Living Conditions
Around 300 displaced families removed from camps in Kismayo have been relocated to open land in the Halgan area, 25 kilometres from the city. These families report facing unemployment, food shortages, water scarcity, and inadequate shelter.
Fadumo Hassan Hussein, one of the displaced, said she has been unemployed for four months. She used to earn a living by washing clothes. She added that the high cost of travel to Kismayo makes finding work and supporting her family difficult. She also said strong summer winds destroyed the grass hut where she lived.
Mohamed Wali Dayib, who has a family of 12, said he is unemployed and must stay in Kismayo to earn money to meet his family’s needs. He noted that water is hard to access in the area, and families must fetch it from the Jubba River, three kilometres away.
Jubaland authorities said the first phase of the relocation project is underway. They are providing people with land ownership, primary and secondary education, and free health facilities. The head of the relocation office said a new support plan will help displaced people access livestock, fishing skills, and farming opportunities.
