UK Prime Minister candidate Andy Burnham has pledged to fully support the Good Friday Agreement if he becomes Prime Minister. This follows his earlier statement that a referendum on Irish unification is not currently on the table. Burnham made the remarks during an official visit to Northern Ireland, where journalists asked if he would back a vote on Irish unity.

Burnham said his visit aimed to help build a functioning government at Stormont. He emphasized that some issues, including a referendum on unification, are not currently under discussion. He added that he fully understands the provisions of the Good Friday Agreement and will protect it 100 percent.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald condemned Burnham’s comments, saying the Prime Minister does not have the right to remove the referendum clause from the agreement. Burnham also said he has sought support from Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Bryant to establish a working government.
