UK Prime Minister candidate Andy Burnham has pledged to fully support the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland if he takes office. This follows his earlier statement that a referendum on Irish unity is not currently on the agenda.

Burnham made the remarks during his first visit to Northern Ireland, saying he came to listen and work on cooperation. He clarified that some issues, including a unity referendum, would not be part of the discussions.

His comments angered nationalist politicians. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said the prime minister does not have the right to remove the referendum clause from the agreement. Burnham later explained that his focus is on establishing a functioning government at Stormont.
